1. Listen Without Judgment

One of the most important things you can do is listen. Survivors often fear being blamed, criticized, or not believed. Let them share at their own pace and remind them that what happened is not their fault.

2. Respect Their Decisions

Leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated and dangerous. Avoid pressuring them to leave immediately or make decisions they are not ready for. Support them in creating a plan that feels safe for them.

3. Offer Practical Help

Small acts of support can make a big difference. You can help by offering transportation, childcare, a safe place to stay, help with paperwork, or assistance finding local resources and shelters.

4. Encourage Professional Support

Encourage survivors to speak with a counselor, therapist, support group, or domestic violence advocate. Professional support can help them heal emotionally and create a safety plan.

5. Check In Regularly

Healing takes time. Continue checking in with them even after the immediate crisis has passed. A simple message, call, or visit can remind them that they are not alone and that someone cares.
